Is there a car visible in The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The
Rings? For awhile I doubted it, but finally on my fifth and final theatrical
viewing I spotted it. For those who are looking for it, I took the following
screen grabs from the National Geographic "Beyond The Movie" DVD. The
scene in question is Frodo & Sam walking through the cornfield (on the NG
disc it is in Chapter 5, "The One Ring", starting at time 18:07).
After Sam tells Frodo that the next step will be the furthest away from home he
has ever been, the next three shots are a long shot, back to a closeup, and then
finally a 2nd long shot. The following stills are taken from the 2nd long shot.
Look inside the red box. Starting just to the left of the tall tree you will see
a dust plume. In each successive still it moves farther to the left.

Even in these stills it is admittedly difficult to see. However, if you watch
the National Geographic disc and concentrate on the red box area during this
scene the moving dust plume is quite obvious.
The car is easiest to spot here, although it is briefly visible in the first
long shot as a moving glint coming out of the copse of trees up the slope to the
right of the red box area.
At this posting it is as yet unclear whether this celebrated gaffe has been
removed from the August 6 DVD release of the film. I rather hope it hasn't. I
like to pretend that what we're seeing is a Black Rider, speeding up the road to
Hobbiton, unaware that he is passing his prey in the field to his left! |
